“Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” — John 7:38

Many years ago Mrs. M. L. Dickinson wrote a poem entitled If We Had but a Day. This is what it says:
.......... We should waste no moments in weak regret.
............... If the day were but one;
.......... If what we remember and what we forget
............... Went out with the sun;
.......... We should be from our clamorous selves set free,
............... To work or to pray,
.......... To be what the Father would have us be,
............... If we had but a day.

How would you live this year if you knew that it was your last year before you met the Lord? How would you live this day if you knew that it was your last? I dare say most of us would live today with a lot less fuss over the cares of this world, and a lot more focus of what is on God’s heart. That is truly the way we are meant to spend our days. We need to have the heart of the Psalmist who cried out to the Lord in Psalm 90:12,
 “Teach us to number our days and recognize how few they are; help us to spend them as we should.” It is important that we spend our days walking in the ways of the Lord with our lives fixed upon being fully surrendered to Him.

While the Bible encourages us to
 “number our days,” it is not enough to merely number our days … we must grab hold of each and every one of them! This is what the over-used phrase “Carpe Diem” is all about. Literally, “carpe diem” is Latin for “seize the day,” meaning that each of us must make the most of the present. It is used to urge young people to grasp the joys and opportunities of life that each day presents before it is too late and they slip away.

A few years ago Carolyn Ahrens wrote a song entitled
 Seize the Day. This is what she said in the song:
............................Seize the day, Seize whatever you can;
................................ ‘Cause life slips away just like hourglass sand.
............................Seize the day, & pray for grace from God’s hand;
................................. That nothing will stand in your way,
..................................................... Seize the Day!

As the Church of the Living God, we have both a glorious heritage and a marvelous future which awaits us on the “great and terrible day of the Lord.” But the truth is that we do our living in the here and now. Let us determine to seize each day and live them for the Lord. Nothing can stand in our way when we live each day onto and for the Living Tri-une God.
